Constructive critique/paintovers appreciated!

This was going to be my second entry for Eraili's umalyn raffle. It was meant to be a speedpaint, but the question as always is when to stop? Ill be honest, I struggled with this one. It was made as practice to learn backgrounds, and lighting and learning how to paint faster because wow even this took a lot longer than it was meant to. I'm uploading it as it is, because I've sort of run out of time for it, and in a way I consider it finished? It was never meant to be fully detailed.

I would really really appreciate a critique on this. I know that the back figure is as flat as can be. But wow, I struggled with shading the rather complex stripes and markings on the characters. I didn't know what are good shortcuts for speedpainting. For textures. For water, for trees, for being able to leave bits unfinished but still looking cool. For dealing with colours in new contexts! Just in general everything!

I do like the log though, I'm proud of that. And the painting looks decent as a teeeeeeennnyy tiny thumbnail. >_>

These lovely fellows belong to:
DawnDeadlyNadder at the front (I know the colours and what are markings and uuugggggg)
Pandapalz at the back, for what its worth

Thanks for submitting to the ZealZone <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w…" width="15" height="15" alt=";)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="387" title=";) (Wink)"/>

I must say this is a great piece of artwork, it looks very good on first site, even tho it's just a sketch <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=":) (Smile)"/>

The first thing that makes some impact on me are those great creatures. It looks like a felid with some awesome-colored eagle wings pasted onto it. I really like custom creatures, especially mammals, I find it always hard to let them look different.

I have got the mindset that art needs to bring forth meaning or impact and not necessarily a feeling that the artist is just great with some tools. This easily does the job, the creatures are presented in a rustic environment, not as fantasy-like as the creatures but the creatures easily add on to that. I find it becaise of the creatures this way a very good piece of art, and original too.

Well what else got I to say ... I am not good at writing critiques but I'll just mention that you got to try to make the background a little bit different?
I mean it's good this way but unless you wanna bring forth a winter landscape, maybe add some green and shrubbery? That way the background looks a little bit better.

I hope this critiques gave you some insights on what you did good and could go better, anyways really great job on this piece <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w…" width="15" height="15" alt=";)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="387" title=";) (Wink)"/>
